Post Mod Contest (Rocket Propelled) - RESULTS
Since it'd be too messy to put it in the old thread and CC48 wont be around for unknown amount of time, so I made a new thread just for this purpose. I'll also be hosting the next contest with same rules like in the old one.

And now, the results:

MOD CONTEST

THEME: Rocket Propelled

PRIZE: Choose theme for next contest

Handheld Mini Rocket Launcher System by dragonxp:

I'm hard pressed to see how this rocket powered. It slows down, doesn't stop, and isn't affected by gravity. It's explosiveness isn't very good either, they're small, and not too strong.

After Exstensive Usage: I was so underwhelmed by this guns ability that I couldn't really put it to good use.

4/10

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Rocket Rifle(s) by Se7en:

First Thoughts: I thought it was the most true to the idea of the contest: rocket powered. Some of the others didn't really seem to do with the contest at all.

After Exstensive Usage: I very much like this gun. It's a weapon that I will keep when the contest is over. Maybe the LV version wasn't really needed, since it's less accurate, weaker, and costs the same. The original is fairly balanced, though, if not under powered, since the explosions are (rightfully) tiny.

I'd have to give it a(n) 8.5/10

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

RocketPropelledRandomness by Mehman:

First Thoughts: I'ts not something normally use. It's extremely over powered, but that's ok, since it's easy to tell it's not supposed to be balanced. I had hoped for it to just spew crabs and vanilla nades and zombies, but I found that it spat out anything Mehman could get hold of. That made for a long loading time when starting the game up.

After Exstensive Usage: Yes, putting a lot of stuff into it made it so you couldn't expect what would come next, but it seemed like it only used a couple things. I don't feel that putting so many versions (Super, Impact, Weapons, Super Impact, Normal) was helpful, it really crammed my buy menu. The Super and Weapon variety is what I would have ditched, they always seemed to use the doomsday weapons, which would destroy my brain often, since I didn't download the doomsday pack (Mehman). Finding that it spat poison gas from Z09 also disapointed me since it was area denial that I didn't need, in the air.

6.5/10

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Gyrojet by Azukki:

First Thoughts: Sure it's not original, and he admits that, but it's the most practical. I really liked the idea, and the execution was skillfull and polished, err, maybe not totally.

After Extensive Usage: Yes, the offset is off by a pixel or two, that is easy enough to fix, and looks real bad. It was also a little to accurate, like a sniper rifle, but in a handgun and AR. Nothing more noted.

7.5/10

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

The Rocket Propelled Platform by Roast Veg:

First Thoughts: It's cool lookin', but I don't know what I could use it for. You can't walk on it, you can't really hurt it, all you can do with it is shoot it into an enemy, which is not the easiest feat.

After Exstensive Usage: Again, I don't see how I can use it, I just sat there watching it. Still, it's pretty cool lookin',

HMRLS Handheld Mini Rocket Launcher System

Gameplay: 5/10
The gun is good for a laugh the first time you fire it, mostly because you're not expecting them to go that fast. After that, the fast firing is annoying. If it fired slower, maybe emptying the clip over 1.5 seconds, it'd be more satisfying. As it is now, it just fires a stream of missiles, then you have to reload. Doesn't give much satisfaction.

Sprites: 5/10
The sprite for the gun is...interesting, but ugly. The glow at the barrel was a good touch though, I liked that. The rockets themselves were unimpressive. If they had a sprite, it was obscured by the glow.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Rocket Rifle

Gameplay: 7/10
The concept isn't that interesting, more than one person had the same idea of rocket propelled rockets that speed up. The execution on the other hand is very well done. The gun is satisfying and boomy and kills well enough. Two things: 1. The zoom on that thing is pretty damn godly for something without a scope. 2. The LV version is the better of the two. The normal version doesn't feel like it speeds up at all, it just zooms.

Sprites: 8/10
Very nice, no real complaints about anything here. A good gun sprite, the effects for the projectile aren't overdone, all in all this gun looks good. It doesn't stand out much though, so I can't give it a higher score.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Rocket Propelled Randomness

Oh god, where to begin.
Gameplay: 6/10
It's effective at killing things, I'll give this mod that. But I don't really know how. It's just a big streak of fire and smoke, and then the enemies are dead. It'd be a little better if I had half a clue what the hell was going on. Also, it seems like this mod is essentially you piggybacking off of other peoples' work, rather than you really making your own mod. You've just thrown a bunch of different mods in an .rte, made a gun that shoots things everywhere, and called it yours. I don't like that.

Sprites: 4/10
I have the same issue here with piggybacking on other peoples' work, but that's all in gameplay.
Oh god, the smoke trail. Does the gun fire a rotting corpse or something, because smoke does not normally look green and decomposing. Aditionally, the smoke and fire and various effects block out half of what comes out of the gun, so I never really have any idea what it looks like or what the hell is going on.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Gyrojet

Gameplay: 5/10
It's probably a good representation of the actual gun, but it just isn't that fun to use. The sharpaim distance just isn't far enough to aim accurately while still being powerful, the gun sounds more like a mouse than an automatic rocket launcher. This could be good if the aesthetics were improved.

Sprites: 7/10
The rifle and pistol aren't bad sprites, but they don't really stand out much.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Rocket Propelled Platform

Gameplay: 3/10
It fails. You can't stand on it, it gibbed randomly while I was using it, and it actually broke my unit's leg. MO-MO collisions are the culprit here, and this mod is the victim.

Sprites: 3/10
This obviously didn't take much work, but I suppose it wasn't supposed to. No real effort made on the sprites, I can tell you that much.

Honestly I found this weapon very uninspired.
There was obvious effort in making the effects, offsets and sprites, but the function and visual
look of the gun felt very plain and it simply wasn't that fun to use.

Meh - 5/10

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Rocket Rifle

I like the visual style and the effects/sounds of the gun. I did not notice a difference in
power between a slow rocket and fast one, nor did the low-velocity version launcher seem all that effective or different.
All in all its still extremely plain and simple, but felt slightly satisfying to use regardless.
And goddamit Se7en, check your mods before releasing them. Almost every release you've made had dependency issues.

Good - 6/10

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

RocketPropelledRandomness1.90

The idea is interesting and its fun, but the whole mod feels very messy (Not the file structure thought, you did a good job keeping it organized).
There's tons of stuff, lots of random, but its all too confusing and not very consistent. I'd say you were a bit too ambitious and messed up a
clean picture with too many details. Figuratively speaking.

I'd suggest focusing on the original idea and making a single gun instead of seperating them.
For the fired rocket, I'd suggest making the trail be less intense and cleaner. Then instead of making the rocket accelerate, turn, and travel so
fast, making it fly much slower and at a constant speed. Finally, make the camera follow the rocket. With all the tweaks mentioned, you'll be able
to improve the mod significantly because it will focus on the most interesting part of the mod: a moving missile of death that spews out all sorts
of crazy ♥♥♥♥ all over the place. And you never know what the hell will come out of it next.

Additionally, make it emit random items more frequently, do not let the items interfere with the rocket and remove items that might cause significant
lag or items that steal the attention of everything else (like the doomsday bomb or items that cause a lot of burning fire).

And finally the gun itself could use a more unique sprite so it would stand out in the menu and really look like this thing is going to ♥♥♥♥ up
the universe if anyone would dare to fire it. And a description for the gun could be cool too.

Very Good - 8/10

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Gyrojet V1.3

Very interesting and a fair weapon(s). The sprites very nice and clear and I really liked the trail effect on the rocket-bullets.
This stuff would pass for official content I'd say.

While the sound effect was very underwhelming, the power of the weapon at long distances really felt nice and satisfying.
Although somewhat I get the feeling, this mod would have worked better as a long range sniper weapon (with an emphasis to use the scope or zoom of some sort)
instead of a pistol or a machine gun, since those should be used in close-to-mid range combat imo. Oh well.

Good - 7/10

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Rocket Propelled Platform

Very creative and glitchy mod. Most original too. This thing certain has some fun uses as a powerful superweapon thanks to its delivery
method and wonky physics. Also I had fun doing rodeo on top of the platform, which usually ended up with a gory mess thanks to cool MO collisions CC has.

When I said glitchy, the platform is too long when it has to settle. Since the maximum size seems to be around 250-300 pixels for an object to settle as a whole, you're platform got its ends cut off.
Also it eats terrain when it deploys or when its pushed down hard enough. Its a very simple mod and it lacks detail. Fun nevertheless.

Fun - 6/10

Final Scores:
4,6 - Handheld Mini Rocket Launcher System by dragonxp
7,3 - Rocket Rifle by Se7en
6,5 - RocketPropelledRandomness by Mehman
6,8 - Gyrojet by Azukki
5,0 - Rocket Propelled Platform by Roast Veg

Those results seem most correct to me.

Congrats, se7en.

Well played, gentlemen, and congratulations, se7en.

Also I'd like to once again restate that I vastly prefer a voting system over a judging system, and suggest that it be done that way for the next contest. I've got a suggestion for how to do it despite broken polls in the main contest thread.

Wouldn't B24 get released within the contest run?

You... are correct.

If the contest started now and contestants could start modding, but couldn't release their entries until B24 was out and the entry was compatible, and then the whole actual contest were done in B24, that could work.

Heheh, i stumbled upon the HMRLS by accident when making another mod.
It was coolish, but i couldn't really think of anything else so i just entered it anyway.

Well played se7en.

I agree, whats your idea?

Also, just got word from Se7en and now I have a theme ready for the next contest.
I have no idea when Data is going to release the B24, but my massive overhaul project for content is still far from done, so I doubt there will be much difference for anything else than the mission/skirmish system, along with some Lua addons (not sure), so the contest wouldn't be largely affected by B24. Atleast not the next one I will host since the theme will be rather simple.

For the next contest, I need some answers for these questions:
1. When to start the contest?
2. How long will it go? (1 or 2 weeks?)
3. What kind of judging system will we use?

I guess I'll repost it, then.
Azukki wrote:
[...] I have an idea for an alternate voting system to avoid the broken polling feature but get the same result.
1) CC48 gets an administration-approved alternate forum user account
2) People email the alt account with their vote clearly marked in the title of the PM, under a specific format.
3) When the time for voting calculation comes up, CC48 deletes any duplicate votes from one person, (leaving the most recent) or any unclearly titled votes, and then counts the votes for each entry
4) After the votes are tallied, CC48 clears the alt account's PM inbox for the next contest
So basically this would function in the same way as forum polling, but the results would be more suspenseful, since only CC48 would see them until the end of voting.
But instead of CC48 it'd be whoever is running the contest, you, I guess.

Sounds good, but would be a little time consuming with the larger mod contests, no?

If every active member here voted, (without an extreme amount of multiple votings or unclear PM subjects) it wouldn't take more than five minutes to tally up the votes. The person running the contest would not be opening these PMs, only tallying votes from the PM subjects, which are all visible from the inbox, along with the PM sender's name, making it easy to detect and delete duplicate votes. And any PMs without a entry name in the subject would be ignored/deleted.
