Post subject:  Game running too fast??

Hello,

Ive just got a trial for CC, and I must say this is by far one of the best games I've ever played!!

one thing is bothering me though... it seems the simulation is running, well, too fast in my machine...

I played around with the settings file, and tweaked the deltaTime parameter... I found that the lower i set it to, the more 'normal' things become... the default value is crazy fast... and things like jumping and jetpacking become frightfully powerful... it's like watching a movie in fast forward... hitting Ctrl+O for frameskip mode seems to make things worse... I've been playing around with the parameters in the settings but haven't found a good balance... a lower deltaTime is definitely more pleasant to play, but the game is not in real-time (drops take way more than 4 seconds)...

using frameskip mode, I see that the timescale indicator is locked at 1.00x, but things move at the previously mentioned frightful speed...

any thoughts?

my system specs are as follows:

Core i7 920 @ 2.66Ghz
Intel DX58SO Mobo
6Gb DDR3 RAM PC12800 (1666mhz)
Geforce 8800GTX 768MB
Matrox Triple Head 2 go (running at 2400x800 res on fullscreen)

Cheers

If 1.00 is unplayable (without frame skipping) then you can change the TimeScale with the 1 and 2 buttons. You can also do this automatically with a little bit of Lua, but post if it works first.

This is why.

Also, 1 and 2.

I got it working now!! it wasn't the processor... I had the meters per pixel parameter set way too high

putting it down to a normal level solved the problem completely!! now i'm REALLY enjoying this game!!

Cheers!! and thanks for the quick replies!!

your processor is quite amazingly good though, which would result in faster simulation. most people have the opposite problem to you, a lot of lag.

Here, I have something that may lag you back to our level

Well, since CC can only take advantage of 1 core,
the processor would be no cause for this problem
because it's only 2.66 Ghz. Would Work the same as
an old Pentium 4 at 2.66 Ghz.

The PixelsPerMeter Variable is a very odd variable indeed.
It simulates faster motion by manipulating the physics engine
so a meter's worth of movement is squeezed into how many pixels are defined.

So if it is 20 (default) then a meter's worth of movement/motion
would be 20 pixels. 65 means that a meter's worth of movement/motion is 65 pixels.
10 means a meter is 10 pixels and "space" is more compressed.

Higher than normal means more movement is put into each frame and things gib less easily etc.
Lower means things move less per frame and things gib more easily etc.
Things always have the same velocity, just this makes them move different amounts in space.

What I want to know is what in the world he was doing messing with the values in the Settings.ini.

Yes, but a multi-core processor can dedicate an entire processor to running the game. I fairly frequently get 50% CPU usage while playing CC.

Also, 6 gigs of RAM doesn't do any harm at all.

So you could sort of simulate our universe by making pixels per metre constantly lower itself. Very slowly of course.
HAHAHAHA RED SHIFTING IN CORTEX COMMAND.

Unfortunately you'd have to make the light-speed equivalent like 500 or something. I'm pretty sure someone told me that particles straight out disappeared at speed 500.

They do, and anything faster than 300 starts to pass through things without registering a hit.

Yes, my desktop is pulling about 300 FPS now :D

But I'm having trouble getting it to run even decently on my laptop... while the big rig is pulling 300, my laptop is barely above 9 FPS...

The laptop is an Acer Aspire 7530, with an AMD 64 X2 processor (about the equivalent of a Pentium D), and 2GB DDR2 RAM running Vista 32 bit... it loads the game VERY slowly, and no matter what I do, I can't get the performance up... I've tried all resolutions... but there's no significant impact... I set the deltaTime way up, and I'm playing in frameskip mode... but 9 FPS is unplayable...

My brother's laptop, which is actually less powerful than mine, is running the game at about 20, which would be perfectly fine for me... he is running XP though... would it make that big a difference?

I found that windowed mode does show better performance than full-screen (contrary to what I would have thought)... and that brings the FPS to somewhere near 14 at times, but in any skirmish when enemies pop up the game crawls to a sluggish 7-8 FPS...

currrently my settings are:

dT : 0.03
RealSimCap : 0.05
post process fx and glow off
resolution: 640x480 in windowed 1x mode

Is there some magic I could work to get better frames?

Oh and another question: while playing on the desktop on full screen 2400x800 res, the mouse pointer gets VERY sensitive (and kinda jumpy)... is there any way to set the mouse sensitivity down? (on any 4:3 res it works fine though)

Cheers

Is his laptop an Intel CPU? I have noticed a pattern that AMD CPUs run Cortex worse than Intel CPUs. No actual usage data, but it seems whenever someone complains that Cortex is running slowly using a modern processor, they're using AMD.

hey man, my new phenom II X3 BE plays CC pretty nicely :-o

Yeah, vista puts on a lot of bloat, and CC generally ♥♥♥♥♥es about that on less powerful hardware like this. You could try doing what a friend of mine does, and closing explorer while playing CC, then reopening it later once done playing. Close EVERYTHING else, and play windowed if possible. Your computer is likely just one of the many that CC hates for an inexplicable reason.
