So we all now that for multiplayer to work the way we want it to would require incredibly fast fiber optics and stuff.

But I think that it could be perfectly possible with a different method.
Similar to a method that a user posted a while back using remote control software where one pc would play cortex command and the other would remotely control it.

In my copy of PCGamer I saw an article about a thing called ONlive which makes it possible to play crysis on a netbook.
Basically, they have theses big farms of high-end computers which do all of the processing and stuff for the game and then just sends back the images to the users computer.

I'm yet to try it myself so cant say how smooth it is, but I definitely think this is the way forward towards multiplayer.

Well, It's coming in winter 2009 so we have a little while - I wonder if indie games such as CC will be represented by the service? Modifications would be a tricky thing to manage too, as they're a big part of CC.

I don't believe the ONlive thing until they can back up their claims. While 80 millisecond lag might seem nothing in a multiplayer game like quake, in ONlive this is input lag, BIG difference there. Also the dedicated encoding hardware that can encode the gameplay video in 1ms probably costs a fortune, now multiply that with clients online. Though I would be all over this, if they could prove me wrong.

Well, I wasn't specifically talking about ONlive but just about the method it uses.

I think that there is no doubt that at some point in the next 10 years, onlive will be a viable service. Not sure if it is quite ready for primetime yet, though it would be great if it was!

as to how this pertains to CC, I think that unless Data wins multiple Lotteries, there won't even be the centralized computer farms necessary to run the games. For each multiplayer game, there would need to be one computer running it, so, yeah. And as someone else said, all the input management stuff probably is super tough and expensive, more so than the actual game... :(

That would take a lot of money, also data said no multiplayer for this game. That does not mean he won't consider it for his next game though.

Which could be ANYTHING. It by no means has to be a 2d physics game.

It could be some random 3d thing about

That was The Fat Sand Rat, I believe.
Anyway, it is totally confirmed that there will be no multiplayer for the game. Data simply doesn't want to go that far. Maybe somebody can figure out how to get it running well with OnLive or equivalent in the future, but it's highly unlikely that it'll be first-party.

...that's funny, I don't think I've ever been drunk...
Yeah, you know how annoying it is to try and aim while jetpacking while two explosive-laden dropships are exploding on-screen?
Add lag.
Recipe for RAGE.

Doesn't have to be big computer farms could just be from one computer to another.

but that would be basically what the standard multiplayer system would be, so I don't really see how that would solve the problem.

on the subject of other ways of multiplayer, i'm pretty sure all the options have been looked through, and making everyone get s special remote control to play online is just ridiculous. (not saying your idea was ridiculous, srry)

i also think that this system for multiplayer (the current one i mean) is pretty hard, since it is almost impossible not to screencheat, and the controls are frustrating, and also as always fitting two people in one computer is pretty frustrating. I'd give a million bucks to the genius who can make online play work for cc.

AK, you can already do that. Just choose 2-player and leave both people on the same team.

Or at least pay full-price again.

But ya, I'd rather have multiplayer for this game than any other game Data could possibly make.
