Post A new threat (A Ronin Short Story)
Inspired by the short story of the clone, I decided to write my own Ronin one. So er... here goes:

I don't know why I did it. I guess I was just too curious. The world was exploding around me and I wasn't even allowed to know why. My Dad said it was for my protection. Mum just cried. That's the way it worked, every time.
So there I was, listening under doors in the main encampment, trying to get as much information as I could. The meeting had been going on for hours, but I had only heard quiet mutterings and whispers. Now, the tone of conversation was incresing, and an argument threatened to break out.

"No Brutus!" I heard my father say, "We cannot afford such a risk so close to our prisoner extraction plan."
"You are making a big mistake, Dafred. If this new threat exists, then we need to arm ourselves for it."

"There is no proof that these... THINGS," he spat the word out, as if it left a bitter taste on his tongue, "even exist. Your sources, Brutus, appear to be wavering. I have trusted your judgement up to this point, but this time I just refuse to believe it."
"We know for sure that the Coalition dumps their waste on the moon, and we have seen plenty of activity up there recently. Come on, Dafred, put two and two together and accept our situation!"

"NO! WHY WILL YOU NOT ACCEPT THAT YOU ARE WRONG?"
"You only refuse such a thing out of fear." The deep, growling voice of Gordon was the only thing my dad really respected. Gordon was a hardened soldier, and had been through more than any of the others put together.

"My husband is not a coward!" Mum retorted. She was always defending him, and only once had she diagreed with him. They still weren't talking.
"Will you please stop, Mia!" Gordon was always very stubborn "You do not know enough about the mission to make decisions on the matter-"

"-and you can stop making that sort of comment to my wife, or i'll-"
"-you might just as well be Gordon, the way you act around me! Do you even love me any more-"

"-this is not the time or the place for that-"
"-when is it time? When? Sometimes I think all sorts of things-"

The last thing I heard was Brutus saying: "Can we PLEASE get back to the matter ay hand-" before everyone began to talk at once and I couldn't make out a sigle word. This went on for a few minutes and then there was a banging on the table and all the voices went silent at once.
My father finished the meeting with "Meeting adjourned."

Then they all began to get up, scraping their chairs on the floor and approaching the door. I scrambled up and tried to get away as fast as I could, but not quick enough. My dad was first out the door and he looked very tired. He saw me and stopped in his tracks. I knew what was coming next but before he could say anything Brutus, Gordon and Mum had entered the hallway, and they all stopped and looked up at me. Mum had tears down her face, Gordon looked grouchy and Brutus had an anxious mark etched on his jawline.
I waited and watched as Dad's temple vein began to swell, his tired face forming that of rage. He opened his mouth to shout at me bu he was interrpted by my mother, who was no longer crying, but had not yet removed the tears from her face.

"Son," she said, as calmly as she could, "what has your father told you about our plans in the war?"
"What I don't know can't hurt me, and everytime I learn I'm one step closer to death." I had said it so many times before, it had lost all meaning to me.

"DAMN RIGHT YOU ARE!" My father suddenly exploded, his face puse and his expression twisted and furious, "WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING? YOU KNOW YOU'RE TOO YOUNG TO BE WORRYING ABOUT THE WAR! LISTNING IN ON OUR MEETINGS AND ASKING QUESTIONS YOU SHOULDN'T BE!"
He paused his rant for a moment and I looked down. Big mistake.

"TOMMY! ARE YOU EVEN LISTENING TO ME!? THIS IS NO WAY I WANT MY SON TO BEHAVE, NOW GO BACK TO YOUR BUNK AND STAY THERE UNTIL I TELL YOU TO COME OUT!"
I ran up the steps and threw myself onto the hard bed I had slept on all my life. I had never left the compound and they said it was the only safe place yet. I wanted to see the sun. I wanted to leave this diry, smelly, oily place as soon as I could.

I was in crap so thick I could have stirred it with a stick, but at least I had learnt something. We have even more enemies now, and they most definately aren't human.

Tell me what you think.
