It is entirely possible. There was a thread about it here but I don't remember which one... anyways, it has something to do with SpriteAnimMode:
0 - once in order
1 - forever in order
2 - randomly forever
3 - ?
4 - animate when walking
and SpriteAnimDuration: time to wait until next frame.

someone called Xio made the original post methinks.

0 = NOANIM
1 = ALWAYSLOOP
2 = ALWAYSRANDOM
3 = ALWAYSPINGPONG
4 = LOOPWHENMOVING
5 = LOOPWHENOPENCLOSE
6 = PINGPONGOPENCLOSE

Lua docs are full of amazing information.

Interestingggg. I will try to include this info in my mods. With PingPong you mean something like KITT's LED lights right? For example it goes forward then backward and then forward again and rinse and repeat...

I've got absolutely no idea.

That's quite literally copy pasted from the Lua Docs and is all the information I've got.

is there anything like an animate with parent? like a 3 frame attachable on a 3 frame limb? (pulled out of my ass but you get the idea)

I tried using spriteanimmode and spriteanimduration, but it just won't work!
