Have the shell be a few particles of whatever smoke you want...check out the rocket launcher, it uses basically that. Also you could shoot an emitter that shoots a bullet and some smoke, if you want them to come from the same place and/or feel lazy.

Im making a little mod about the 18th century just for myself and I was wondering if its possible to add so smoke comes out the barrel when you shoot. Im not good at all at modding and would appreciate a explanation on how to do it. |

It would probably be easier to just put smoky stuff in the muzzleflash. |
