This is a gun that shoots nigh-invisible explosive barriers.
The Phase Acceleration Field, or PAF Gun. (Thanks to CandleJack for the name)
In its current state it fires a preliminary round which then, after about 1 second, emits the barrier at a right angle to the preliminary round. The particles that compose the barrier are quite visible at this point so that you can see what it's doing; however, after completion I hope to make it only just visible.

Anyway, I'm having trouble putting those little touches onto a device that really make it feel like a part of the game. This is still just a concept weapon, so its lacking in many ways. I'd like to turn it into a more polished creation.

What in particular should be added to make it a more finished product? (And how exactly is that done?)

well you could make a NULL sprite and add an atomgroup and add a glow effect to it (the glow effect being the partially visible shield*) so, it will act exactly the same as if it were auto-atomgrouped based on the sprite you have now but it will only be partially visible.

*you can adjust the strength of the glow to make it more or less visible.

I think the barriers might be invisible to the AI.

im pretty sure the Ai tries to avoid fast moving stuff. and these "fields" move very very fast.
