Spriting and bit depth, Need some help
I'm having some trouble with making sprites for new actors. First I tried making them using the palette colours in base.rte on paint, then saving them as an 8bit bmp. But paint messed the colours all up to hell when I didn't that, which wouldn't be so big a problem but it changes the pink background transparency. Then it would let me save it with any new colours unless I start a new file. I tried using photoshop (cs2) but it won't let me save my crap and 8bit bmps, only as 16 24 or 32 bit. And the 16 bits either don't show up in the game or turn stripy and messed up. This happens even when I use a minimal number of colours and use only the palette colours. The only way I can seam to get it to work is to copy an existing file from the base.rte and draw over it, which I'm not gonna do because it limits me to only the colours already used in actors (which aren't the ones I need to use)
tltr; How do I use photoshop cs2, or another program I could get my hands on, to save sprites in the correct bmp format to use in actors.
~thanks

~thanks Use Paint, pretty much. That's what everyone uses. Alternately, GraphicsGale, which is free ( http://www.humanbalance.net/gale/us/).

You have to copy and then load an image that's already in the CC palette and use the default save.

Or you could use Paint.NET, which is basically a bootleg version of Photoshop.

Or, it doesn't matter what program you use. You need the palette first.

When I've tried drawing over an existing file in the past it's only let me use the colours in that file already

Cortex Command uses a specific palette in their images. It helps the game run faster, because it only has to deal with a specific 256 colors. You have to use these colors, and you can find them all in the palette.bmp image in Base.rte.

No, that's not what I mean. I mean the like 8 colours that the file I'm drawing over uses.

Then again, I've always drawn over the palette. You mean to say that when you click on the color red in Paint, it paints the closest color to red in the sprite? And I can't believe that Photoshop does not have the ability to save in 256 colors. I mean, I know it's a photo editing program, but even though.

Re: Spriting and bit depth, Need some help
Nevermind I got it working, It weird, I could paste my sprites over the files and they'd work. I'll figure it out later.
Another question, rather off topic; do I have to adjust the walk and stand paths to fix the offset of the foot sprites? Cause the offset where they're attached to the legs don't seem to do anything
