Post ATTENTION
All morons:

Lua does not instantly mean you can make absolutely anything in this game.

Odds are, it will be even more limited in early iterations than .ini modification is now.

Here is the ENTIRE TEXT of the source of the rampant community hype.

Quote:
Lua scripting. We are finally starting to integrate proper scripting into the engine. At first, it will only handle game logic for scenes, so scenarios and events during missions can easily be set up in external script files and not be hardcoded. Eventually, we hope to expose AI and other actor behaviors as well, so you can literally make your own AI modes - with control all the way down to how the AI guys look, aim, and shoot.
The current data (.ini) files will still be left intact, and the script files are just to be added and referred to by the object definitions in those existing data files.

NOW.

Read it carefully.

Does it mention actor coding? Does it mention replacing the current CC variable definitions? In fact, it mentions the exact opposite. It WON'T replace default coding.

ALL Data mentions is the ability to manipulate things during Scenes, presumably in a Create your own Campaign sort of style, and the ability to edit AI. NOT GUNS, NOT CRAFT, NOT DEVICES.

Lua != Mods that defy the fabric of CC
Lua != Online play
Lua != You demanding that your stupid ass impossible mod be made and having it cranked out in ten seconds.

YOU ARE NOT GOING TO INSTANTLY SEE FABULOUS MODS WITH LUA.
LUA WILL NOT INSTANTLY SHAKE THE FABRIC OF CC TO ITS CORE.
LUA WILL NOT DO MUCH AT ALL, REALLY.

Now. The next person I see who mentions Lua as a possible solution to a currently impossible problem gets a boot lodged firmly up their ass.

What it does mean, is that you'd better start making kick ass scenes as soon as he implements LUA based triggers.

I know I will. :D

Data says, "At first..." which means eventually it will count mods...or atleast probably. For now though, I'm happy to settle with better AI and Uber maps.

heh, already got one planned out (It's already set out with default CC bunker modules (that will be redone with a proper skin with build 21) and I have drawn plans) it will contain loads of objects like skyscraper.rte (yeah I forgot the map name). I have drawn up a load of events and cut-scenes etc. to happen and a few test weapons on pedestals with a portal bay (three portals linking to other places), HOWEVER portals have need been confirmed so it may be cut out.

I can still wish that Lua can be used on any current actor type/MOS type.

EDIT: When Data implements Lua do you A) think he will start on the campaign or B)wail until CC is almost finished and proceed to make the editors better (even though I think Promster codes them, check credits), so they can do as Prom said (plop all the weapons and actors out once a tool is made)

He says "at first" and then mentions the possibility of applying it to AI behaviour.

NOWHERE does it mention affecting direct actors, guns, or craft.

In game gifs with audio, and instances ( an encounter unfolds, like an ambush ) !

Because he mentioned Scenario Editor ( NOT SCENE EDITOR ) !

But, those new game modes do sound like they have potential.
And that combined with future AI Lua integration, means that we'll be able to make some very interesting game modes and such.

And in the distant future, Lua may be integrated further, and allow other new things. But don't be expecting ridiculous portals and alt-firing turrets on dropships in the meantime.
