seriously, add some kind of glow to the laser and get rid of the squiggles, they're so ugly they don't fit with the beautiful explosions.

I love the squiggles, they remind me of all the old retro laser effects in the old games I used to play. I don't think they look ugly at all. Unfortunately there is no way of adding glow to a laser, it's possible to use a muzzle flash to make a laser look thicker but then it will appear to pass through everything. To create a laser effect you have to use a pixel with a trail, it's only possible to add a screen effect to the pixel at the beginning of the trail. The effect you would get is a bunch of flickery glow balls along the length of the laser. [edit] bare in mind a .gif does not capture every frame as you would see it in the game, looking at the .gif I can tell you that the muzzle flash sprite looks much better in real time.

Also I think a cannon on the top of the crab that shoots slightly less damaging flak cannon shells rapid fire.
