APFSDSs don't explode. They're a kinetic energy weapon. Which means they just pierce things. It's like a giant arrow made of depleted uranium, traveling very fast.


Swear I saw high explosives in the diagram... oh well, still massive.

I'm pretty sure the explosives are propellant for massive damage. A resulting explosion may be from igniting stuff in the target, methinks.

Is there any reason that it couldn't ALSO be explosive?

I find that things are better with more explosions.
