Pixelmator - Does it work for CC Spriting?
Hello again. I have recently found this awesome software (for Mac) called Pixelmator. It's very similar to PhotoShop, but in some cases... Better. It's not free though as it's sold on their website for $59. Thats cheap for how good it seems. I'm thinking of buying it, but I'm not sure if it works with CC Sprites. They said that it doesn't have CMYK (I'm not sure what it is) so I'm wondering if that has anything to do with sprites. I'm using the trial and it doesn't seem to allow exporting. If any of you guys can visit their website and help me out, I'd be very thankful. URL: http://www.pixelmator.com/Note: I've actually come across some free programs, but CC gives an error about the sprite when I make one using said program. This is the same for the trial. I hope it actually works if I buy it. Thanks in advance. -KP

Well, for CC sprites to work, they must be: -filetype is .bmp, that is, windows bitmap. -colored in the right palette (that is, the one in base.rte). is your sprite(s) following the requirements above?

Re: Pixelmator - Does it work for CC Spriting?
Yes, I sprite for CC quite often. They all fit the requirements. Wait... Now that you mentioned it, I've seen that .bmp's have quite a few settings. How many bits does CC use? 16? 32? I'm not quite sure after all.
Edit: I tried opening a sprite file with the program and edited it. It gave me this error: Failed to Load Data file with the following path: "Alphatec.rte/JetPack Elite.bmp". What should I do now?

CC sprites, according to PSE, are 24-bit images with a modified color scheme. The bit depth might be what's causing an error, but the colors shouldn't matter for being accepted into the game if they're simple.

CC sprites are 256 colors with a custom palette. The sprite HAS to be in this palette or it will look weird in game. A common method of converting a sprite to the right palette is to paste your sprite over a base.rte sprite in Paint. I don't know if a similar method exists for macs

Also, check the frames. Have you alphabetized it correctly? Are you using a Mac?

Re: Pixelmator - Does it work for CC Spriting?
Thanks for helping, guys. Yes, I'm using the palette, and I spelt it correctly in the *.inis I'm using a Mac, and what do you mean by Checking frames? And "bit depth"? I'm not quite sure what that is. Thanks anywise. '

Looks like your image wasn't in palette. It was set to 24bit mode.

Re: Pixelmator - Does it work for CC Spriting?
I tried Pixelmator and didn't like it. If I had to choose between pixelmator and MS paint, I'd for the latter one because of the interface and functionality, the whole program didnt function like I would have expected from a pixel editor. Heck, even photoshop might work better and that one is on a mac too, but still.
From what I've researched, macs generally fail in pixel art and spriting. There are no other suitable programs for Macs to make sprites for CC besides Photoshop (and maybe GIMP, but that thing is a piece of ♥♥♥♥ imo) and even then those programs mentioned are not designed for the task you need them for and you'll have to tweak lots of crap and other settings just to be able to start spriting stuff with palettes, unlike in PaintShopPro 10 (or older) or MSPaint.

Pixelmator - Does it work for CC Spriting?
I don't really like GIMP too much, but at least it's free. PS is just WAAAAY too expensive to get. I'd also prefer MS Paint, but the closest I got to Paint (for a Mac) was "Paintbrush" and it got the same error Pixelmator did. Even though I'm still going to buy pixelmator (for other purposes) but I just want to know how I can set it to work with CC sprites.
Edit: I also found another one called "Pixel". This is a bit closer to GIMP, (also not free, and more expensive) and I just don't know how to export my sprites properly. *Why didn't they make paint shop for mac?*

If you can assign an indexed color palette to the image, and save it as 8bit, then you'll be cool.
