I'd make some crass joke about how it's vista's fault, but that's not exactly true.
I dunno, try my previous suggestion, and if that doesn't work, you might have to ask somebody who knows something about spriting.

This is all pretty durn neato. Though at the same time I'm not really disappointed with my spriting endeavors. Usually.

Use Graphics Gale and copy an existing CC sprite. It will show you all the colors you can use in the palate and automatically converts it.

Gotta say, this is a pro method for quick and decent looking sprites! Makes me warm inside to see pretty little instruments of death come out of my MS Paint. So, thanks. You've re-agitated my modding itch.

Still just as hard to make frames of animation though, so this is only useful for static sprites.
Even if you draw them large in flash you still have to get the movement right, and that's possibly harder when it's bigger.
