Another sprites question, probably very simple solution
Hi, I'm somewhat of a noob to cortex command and although I'm getting the hang of .ini files, I'm having trouble using sprites other than the ones in the game. I'm using the right colors, because the game accepts them, but when I load the sprite in the game, say, a gun, the gun appears fine untill I rotate it 90 degrees, then it suddenly becomes a jumbled mess of pixels. This is not an offset problem or color problem. Is there some sort of variable i need to adjust so that the gun's mirror image does not get messed up when rotated?

Firstly, this should be in mod making. Secondly, this is, in fact, a color problem - your sprite is using the right colors but has no palette. Take a look here. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=12442

Re: Another sprites question, probably very simple solution
Thank you for replying but I have a mac so this does not exactly work for me, since I dont have photoshop or ms paint. Pardon my ignorance on this topic but could you please clarify what you mean by the "right colors but wrong palette?" Isn't the palette the colors that are acceptable in the game? Those are the only ones I have used.

Re: Another sprites question, probably very simple solution
The sprite has to be saved as a 256-bit bitmap in the proper color palette; just copying the colors over is not sufficient. The game simply doesn't read a 24-bit or improperly saved bitmap correctly.
As far as what to do, honestly I don't know. There has to be some way to do it on a Mac, but I haven't yet heard of one.

Download and use Gimp. Pretty sure the palette files are around here somewhere... EDIT: Actually just load Palette.bmp in Gimp and load the palette from it according to some other posts...

Re: Another sprites question, probably very simple solution
Thanks for the replies everyone, I will try it! One question though, what do you mean by "load the palette from it?" This might become apparent to me when I get gimp, but how do you load a palette?
(Sorry for excruciating noobishness and lack of computer knowledge in posts)
Edit: After I downloaded gimp it said that I needed X11 to run it, whats that? (I know this is sinking into the technical area of the forums)

X11 is a version of operating system. What version of Mac's operating system are you using? Apart from this, I have no solution other than to get someone with a PC to do it for you, perhaps resorting to just asking someone here to do it.

Wow, this was exactly what I wanted to know, and its working.
Now just to deal with a ton of sprites.
Again.
At least most of the coding is done.

Re: Another sprites question, probably very simple solution
Sorry to diverge from the topic slightly, X11 is a windowing system that runs inside osX, it's a program. Apple puts it on the extra install disk for the OS, and it's downloadable from their website. Sounds like you found it. I don't much like using it, as it's not that efficient, though very good for making mac ports of linux programs. Another program that does good editing on the Mac is Pixen http://opensword.org/Pixen/, which also does palettes well, and does not need X11. Seashore http://seashore.sourceforge.net/ is basically the same idea, a lightweight editor. Appleworks is also capable, but old now. Oh, and with WINE installed, window's own paint runs fine.
